Most people identify Luxury Vinyl Tiles as

  • Karndean

OR

  • Amtico

You have probably heard of these two names, however these are just brand names of luxury vinyl tiles, most vinyl tiles, especially from Karndean and Amtico are made in Asia, shipped over to the UK and sold as Karndean or Amtico, through clever marketing. However this section details each brand and explains the pro's and con's for each brand and gives a rating for each brand based on quality, price, choice and marketing, an essential read before you choose what vinyl tile to go for.

Amtico

Amtico are the original luxury vinyl tile suppliers. Amtico started the craze many years ago through clever marketing avenues, lovely room set images and various design elements. However in today's market Amtico are slightly behind the brand leader, as they have a really good quality vinyl tile but it is very expensive compared to other brands. Here is how Amtico compares when asking the all important quaestions

  • Product Quality 4/5
  • Price 1/5
  • Choice 4/5
  • As a Company 3/5
  • TOTAL OVERALL SCORE: 3/5

Karndean

Karndean have emerged in recent years as the brand leader, however it is fair to say, they admired the way Amtico operated, then more or less copied what they did well and pitched their prices just under Amtico, to give them a competitive advantage. However in recent months, Karndean have followed Amtico again and tried to become more exclusive in who they deal with, thus creating many enemies in the trade and thus decreasing their sales. To be fair Karndean have a good selection of products but have increased their prices, which has altered their price score.

  • Product Quality 4/5
  • Price 2/5
  • Choice 4/5
  • As a Company 2/5
  • TOTAL OVERALL SCORE: 3/5

Polyflor

Polyflor are part of a huge group, which operates all over the world, their main business is within the safety flooring sector, i.e schools, hospitals etc. However they have a decent variety of luxury vinyl tiles and do this very well, with limited marketing Polyflor vinyl tiles are a good quality value for money product. Always take a look at Polyflor vinyl tiles before buying any others to compare, which is why we rate Polyflor as the best brand in luxury vinyl tiles.

  • As a Company 4/5
  • TOTAL OVERALL SCORE: 4/5

There are a lot of other Luxury Vinyl Tiles brands available and these are all worth considering, the way to judge the quality of a vinyl tile is to look at the following factors:

1. How thick is the WEAR LAYER?

The quality of a vinyl tile is always measured through the thickness of the wear layer, wear layers are usually made between 0.2mm and 1.0mm. For a domestic situation i.e your home, a wear layer between 0.2mm and 0.4mm is still classed as heavy domestic for the usage it recieves. A 0.5mm - 0.6mm wear layer is an extra heavy domestic quality and light commercial quality and anything from 0.7mm - 1.0mm is heavy commercial, it can also be used in domestic but is not necessary due to the quality, if you can pick up a 0.7mm wear layer vinyl tile for under £17m2 it will be a bargain. 2. Is it P.U Coated?

Most vinyl tiles are PU Coated, this means it will have a protective layer which prevents it from fine scratches etc. if a vinyl tile does not have this coating (i.e Most Karndean vinyl tiles) then it will need to be treated with the cleaning and maintenance procedure immediately after fitting.
